Becoming a registered nurse (RN) is a path that is more in demand with an increasing aging population in the United States. All states require registered nurse applicants to have a high school diploma or a GED. A RN must be able to pass the NCLEX-RN test. Before being able to take the NCLEX test to become a registered nurse in America, you must hold either a diploma in nursing, associates degree in nursing or a bachelor degree in nursing. Each state will have it's own requirements to become a RN.

Choosing the right nursing school is important. If you choose a bad school and not a top ten nursing school, you may not learn enough to pass the NCLEX-RN exam. Get to know the support staff at the school. There are a number of online nursing schools popping up to handle the increase in demand for nursing students. Try to talk to students to see if they were happy with their experience.

It is important to choose an accredited nursing school. Most state will not accept non-accredited online nursing schools as part of their requirements. Ask the admissions department at the online university to see if they are accredited or not.

Most nursing programs will take 2 to 4 years. An associates degree will take about 2 years while the nursing bachelor degree takes about 4 years. 4 year programs teach you more to handle nursing duties. The 4 year bachelors program does cost quite a bit more money. Depending on your financial situtation, a 2 year associates nursing degree may be the preferred path.
